A Winona Guide for Visiting University Parents & Families
Before the leaves changes, there’s one last chance to savor summer between the bluffs. Winona welcomes students and their families back to town to celebrate school, community, and our beautiful river town. Winona, Minnesota offers adventure, food, art, and live music galore to make for a full family weekend.
Best Family Hikes and Sightseeing
Soak up the sun and view both our beautiful lakes from Garvin Heights — either trek up or drive to see the Mississippi, campus, and the city from a bird’s eye view. Looking to lounge by the water or play some disc golf together? We recommend Prairie Island Campground. A cute camp store and canoe/kayak rentals make this a convenient and safe destination that is driveable from downtown.
If you’d like to walk from Winona State University, East Lake provides great views of iconic Sugar Loaf and Lake Lodge Recreation Center offers paddleboard and canoe rentals for the whole crew.

Check in, grab your safety gear from Lake Lodge or just stroll along the paved paths and enjoy the cool breeze.

Hometown History for the Whole Family
In need of a cute Winona sweatshirt or gift? Stop by our Visitor Center also located between the lakes! Our Visitor Service Associates can give you the insider tips on where to go and what to do in Winona.
Interested in river lore and the seasoned history of Winona? See and hear all the stories at the Winona County History Center (WCHC) and then top off the day at Watkins General Store & Museum. WCHC has multiple galleries steeped in Winona history and also features an amazing gift shop. Watkins sells their iconic spices and a museum that pays homage to the delicious hospitality that originated here.

Hungry For More?
All the exploring will get you and yours in the mood for good grub. Enjoy some of the best locally-owned delis and drink stops in the driftless. Sandwiches from Beno’s Deli and coffee and croissants from Cafe Sapori di Sicilia are some of our current fan favorites.

We welcome all students, parents, and alumni back to the best little city on the Mississippi. Our walkable downtown, outdoor recreation, and multitude of lodging options are perfect for letting your wild side roam. Welcome Home.
