Anna Metcalfe: Upstream

Upstream features works by artist Anna Metcalfe that focus on her decade-long investigation of the waters of the Upper Midwest. With a background in clay, Metcalfe is interested in how social engagement is endemic to craft and how it can be a conduit for social and environmental change. Her work investigates relationship to landscape and water through community storytelling and personal narrative. Works will include ceramic installation and community-engaged projects that reflect the artist’s abiding connection with water.

Maria Svarbova: Swimming Pool

Maria Svarbova creates colorful and atmospheric photographs of Socialist era swimming pools in her native country of Slovakia. Her figures are carefully composed, yet detached from the viewer, creating soothing, dreamlike scenes which offer silence, contemplation, beauty, and mystery. Her style is simultaneously retro and futuristic, and her warm, aqueous palette is pleasing and inviting. Svarbova has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions through out Europe, but this is the first US museum solo exhibition of this award winning photographer.

Ceramic works by Lisa Truax: Recollection of Space

This exhibit consists of various sized round, ceramic wheel thrown forms, whose interiors range in color and texture depending on the various found materials that have been incorporated. Her works titles such as “42.5847425, -87.8211853, 2017” reflect the locations of the sourced items. Truax is currently an Associate Professor of Art and Design at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota in Winona. The public is invited to a reception for the exhibit on Thursday, March 7 from 4:30-6:00pm.

Artwork created by local students is now on display in Galleria Valéncia at the Minnesota Conservatory for the Arts (MCA), 1164 W. Howard St. The artwork was created by students of Jeff Morgan, K-12 art educator and artist who has taught all levels of public school and post-secondary students since 1998 for Winona Area Public Schools. Join the Great River Shakespeare Festival to celebrate the Bard’s birth (and death) day at Westgate Bowl with a good old-fashioned BOWLING PARTY! Light appetizers and cake will be provided. Bring your own shoes or rent some there. This event is open to everyone. Bowlers will have to pay a lane fee. You do not have to bowl to attend! All are welcome to have some cake, hang out, and get ready for the beginning of the season!

Prairie Fire Children’s Theatre (PFCT) will be back in Winona to present their original version of the classic tale, “Beauty and the Beast”. “Beauty & the Beast”, with script and music by Daniel Nordquist and costume and set design by Deborah Nelson-Pick is a tale about an unjust prince, a gypsy curse, and a young girl who sees beyond appearances. Art Exhibit: The Art of Music, The Music of Art

To celebrate Mid West Music Fest (MWMF), artist Jeff Morgan will exhibit his drawings, paintings, and photographs of local musicians at the Winona Public Library throughout the month of May. Morgan will give a talk on the art in Library’s Bell Art Room on Thursday, May 2nd at 6pm.  The event is free and open to the public.
