International Owl Awareness Day Celebration

The International Owl Center is celebrating International Owl Awareness Day by offering free admission to all on Monday, August 3. There will also be a variety of other fun owl-themed food and activities around Houston.

At the Owl Center, visitors will be able to meet four or five live owls including a Barred Owl, Eastern Screech-Owl, Barn Owl, Great Horned Owl and potentially a Burrowing Owl (if she agrees to come to work that day!) The Owl Center will be open from 9:30am – 5:00pm, with 30-minute programs presented every hour on the hour from 10:00am – 4:00pm, including a brand-new program about the language of the Great Horned Owl by Executive Director Karla Bloem. Door prizes to help people live owl-friendly lives will be awarded throughout the day. Some programs may be standing-room only (most likely in the morning).

The Houston Community Center will also be open from 9:30am – 5:00pm. You’ll find loads of the very popular children’s owl art from around the world for sale, a rummage sale of owl items, and vendors featuring owl fabric art, owl photo cards and prints, and quilled owls. From 10:00am – 4:00pm Tappy’s Face Painting will be doing owl face painting for a fee there too.

Several businesses will offer fun owl-themed food: River Valley Convenience Store will have owl face ice cream, Barista’s Coffee House will have owl-themed beverages, and JT’s Bar and Grill will have owl face burgers.
