Laureate Writers Series: Matt Cashion

Matt Cashion, a fiction writer who teaches creative writing at UW-LaCrosse, will read from his work at the Blue Heron on Tuesday, August 4th at 7 p.m. as part of the continuing Laureate Writers Series. Cashion’s reading will be followed by a Q&A, book signing, and an Open Mic to which any writers, veterans or first-timers, may read from their work.

Matt Cashion is the author of four books, most recently HOW WE DO THINGS HERE, a collection of linked stories named a finalist in the Flannery O’Connor Award for short fiction. His story collection, LAST WORDS OF THE HOLY GHOST, won the 2015 Katherine Anne Porter Prize, and his novel, OUR 13th DIVORCE, won the Edna Ferber Book Prize. A three-time winner of the Zona Gale award for short fiction, his short story, “Music Appreciation for Dead People,” won first prize in the 2023 Wisconsin People & Ideas fiction contest. His work appears in The Sun, Cincinnati Review, Carolina Quarterly, Florida Review, in the anthology HOPE IS THE THING, and elsewhere. Born in the North Carolina mountains and raised in Coastal Georgia, he has worked as a reporter, bartender, piano mover, and convenience store clerk. He earned an MFA from the University of Oregon and now teaches Creative Writing at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, where he serves as faculty advisor for Steam Ticket Literary Journal.

Following Matt Cashion’s reading, there will be a Q&A, a book signing, and an OPEN MIC at which anyone, veteran or first-timer, is invited to present their work.
