Janet Lobberecht is an artist working in Minneapolis, MN. Her work sits somewhere between painting and drawing. The paintings are built using repeated gestures of burying and extraction, searching for life beneath the surface and the quiet movement of unseen forms. Figures, creatures, and landscapes emerge not from fantasy but from prolonged presence in the material. Moments of insight are buried, lost forever or waiting to be rediscovered. Surfaces accumulate traces of process while remaining opaque to final meaning.
This work creates moments of uncertain recognition, asking viewers to inhabit the gap between what is known and what persists as mystery, to not readily understand what they are seeing, and to wonder when and where they are.
Janet holds an MFA in Transdisciplinary Design from Parsons /The New School for Design, where she focused on systems and urban ecologies. She has received a Minnesota Artist Initiative Grant, the McKnight Visual Arts Fellowship and the Jerome Emerging Artist Fellowship.
