Page Series welcomes celebrated musician Leyla McCalla

The Page Series presents multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Leyla McCalla on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 7:30 p.m., in the Page Theatre at Saint Mary’s University. Deeply influenced by traditional Creole, Cajun, and Haitian music, as well as by American jazz and folk, Leyla McCalla’s music “sways with delicious musicality,” (NPR). At once earthy, elegant, soulful and witty, it vibrates with three centuries of history, yet also feels strikingly fresh, distinctive and contemporary. After touring with the Carolina Chocolate Drops, McCalla’s solo career has seen collaborations with Marc Ribot, Rhiannon Giddens, and Louis Michot as well as performances as part of the folk supergroup Our Native Daughters. Her latest release, “The Capitalist Blues,” reflects the influence of New Orleans on her music, as well as the “pressure cooker” effects of today’s society.
