Star Tribune Features Winona’s Boathouse Community

If you’ve been to Winona, someone has undoubtably suggested that you check out the Latsch Island Boathouses. These floating homes have become an iconic feature of Winona. Unique and ingenious, many even seemingly double as artistic installations.

Star Tribune writer Matt McKinney and photographer David Joles visited recently and documented their time here in a wonderful story about the boathouse community and the perils that it faces during an intense flood year such as this one.

McKinney writes, “The record-setting, levee-bursting floods on the Mississippi have tested the will of the tinkerers, artists and independent-minded homeowners who make up one of Minnesota’s most unusual neighborhoods”.

The article features brilliant photos for a close up view, and interviews with the residents who explain what life is like living on the surface of the Mississippi.
