Star Tribune Names Winona one of Minnesota’s ‘5 Hottest Small Towns’

Star Tribune reporter Erica Pearson has learned what Winonans have known for years; our city is the coolest.

In an article titled, “5 Hottest Small Town Destinations in Minnesota,” by Star Tribune staff, Winona is front and center amongst its peers. With a plethora of festivals and a bevy of local institutions, Winona charms every visitor.

Pearson writes, “It’s not an exaggeration to call the city of 26,928 a cultural haven. Winona has been on a festival roll lately, coming up with original yearly events that draw tens of thousands.” She goes on to list the festivals: The Midwest Music Fest, The Minnesota Beethoven Festival, The Frozen River Film Festival, The Great River Shakespeare Festival, and many more.

Pearson doesn’t stop with the festivals though, she also makes mention of year round draws like: The Minnesota Marine Art Museum, Ed’s (no name) Bar, Bloedow’s Bakery, The Blue Heron Coffeehouse, Island City Brewery, and the JR Watkins Store. She says, “All this arty fun has grown over the past decade or so, helping spur new places like a hipster music bar, a small but world-class art museum and, of course, a craft brewery — Island City Brewing Co., which is located right next to the newly revitalized Levee Park.”

Winona is so proud to be on this list. You can read the full article here
