Airport Lake
Looking for largemouth bass? Airport Lake is a charming lake located near the local airport, offering a serene spot for relaxation and recreation. It’s a favored destination for anglers and nature lovers, who enjoy its peaceful waters and scenic surroundings. The lake provides a tranquil escape within the city’s landscape, perfect for picnicking and enjoying the outdoors.
Bartlet Lake
Anglers can expect to find a variety of fish including black bullhead, black crappie, bluegill, brown bullhead, northern pike, walleye and yellow perch here. Bartlet Lake is a quiet backwater lake inside the Winona dike, near the airport. It’s a good place to fish in the warm months and a great ice fishing spot.
Dam Fishing
Many fish species migrate up and down rivers and streams, but dams impede this movement, making these popular fishing spots. The area below dams is often scoured by rushing waters, creating deep holes that attract fish, including giant catfish. Commercial fishing floats operating below Lock & Dams 4, 5A, 6, and 7 offer amenities for anglers, and cold weather drives species like walleyes and saugers to the deep waters there. Public fishing spots are common near dam lock chambers and spillways, which also draw fish attempting to migrate upriver.
Lake Winona
Throw a line in at the Huff street pier or others around the lake. The trail around Lake Winona is most generally referred to around town as ‘the bike path’, but you’ll find folks jogging, rollerblading, skateboarding, and of course, walking on these beautifully maintained paved lanes that circle lovely our lovely lake. Huff Street separates the two sections of the lake. And there’s so much to see on your walk with views of the bluffs, cherry blossoms, a rose garden, numerous piers and docks, a frisbee golf course, a lodge that rents equipment, the beautiful Winona Bandshell, and the Visitor Center!
Levee Park
Still a prime spot to catch a bald eagle in action or to catch a fish at the levee. Levee Park, along the banks of the Mississippi River, offers a picturesque setting for recreation and relaxation. With its scenic walking paths, green spaces, murals, and riverfront views, the park provides a unique escape in the heart of downtown. You can enjoy picnics, outdoor concerts, and festivals like Mid West Music Fest while soaking in the beauty and vibe of the Mississippi River.
Michael LaCanne Park
Catch a big one off Halverson Fishing Pier! La Canne Park currently consists of a swimming beach, fishing pier, boat launch, playground equipment, soccer fields, a paved walking/bike path, and restrooms. There is also the Gordie Selke Pavilion and the Lions Pavilion which are available for rental.
Mississippi River Backwaters
There’s good fishing from the shore, or you can launch a canoe or motorboat to explore the extensive Mississippi backwaters. Options include Merrick State Park, Fountain City, Wisconsin; Schneider’s Lake/Sandy Hook, Minnesota City, Minnesota; Sam Gordie’s Slough & Swift Creek, Winona; Mud Lake, Winona; Homer Trestle, Homer, Minnesota; Trempealeau Lakes, Trempealeau, Wisconsin.
Prairie Island
A popular spot to watch the world go by. Prairie Island finds anglers catching a variety of fish on the downstream end of the culvert under the causeway to Prairie Island, especially in the spring and during high water. And on the scenic trail catch a glimpse of the hawks, eagles, deer, and migrating birds that call these backwaters home.
Whitewater State Park
The trout fishing is excellent in all designated trout waters in this park. Marvel in the park’s rugged limestone bluffs, pristine trout streams, and scenic hiking trails.
