10 Fun Things to Do in Winona: A Stunning River Town

Travel Blogger, Jenn, featured Winona in her blog “Day Tripper.”  She spent a day in Winona and listed 10 fun things to do. She started her day at Bloedow Bakery and it was business as usual on a Saturday: a line of people stretching out from the front door to around the block! She visited Levee Park which sits on the Mississippi River: ” It’s the perfect location for a picnic, or just to chill with your morning coffee,’ and also includes the Levee Park Boulders for those who want to test their climbing skills. She picked up breakfast at the Farmers’ Market, “the spot to be on a Saturday morning.”

She left the valley and made her way up to Garvin Heights Park to see the Mississippi River valley from the top of bluff, 500 feet above the city.  “Great spot to show the kids the area, grab a set of binoculars to bring with you!”  Her next activity was a climb to the base of the Sugar Loaf Bluff:  “If you are only going to do one hike, this is the one to do. It towers 500 over lake Winona below.”  A visit to Lake Park included a walk along the trail as well as a stop at the  ‘Every Kids Dream Park.’ A visit to the Minnesota Marine Art Museum led her to this reaction: “Never had I seen so many famous works of art all in the same room.”  Lunch at the Lakeview Drive-Inn was “truly a fun experience.”

Her two final destinations were upriver from Winona. The Lock and Dam No. 5  has a viewing platform that “puts you right next to the action.” She did one more hike before heading home and that was up the 585 steps at the John Latsch State Park. “At the top, you’ll be rewarded with the best view in town.”

“Traveling as almost as far south as you can get along the Great MN River Road, you’ll run into the fun town of Winona. This small town has a mix of fun hikes, community lakefront paths, epic playgrounds, and Mississippi River Views. Come on the weekend and enjoy a farmers’ market and get the real feel for the town. You could easily spend a weekend exploring the many things to do in Winona.”
