On the home page of its website, River Travel Magazine says that its mission, “focuses on communities and attractions on both sides of the Mississippi River, and was formed to showcase the nationally designated and internationally known Great River Road, 3,000 miles bordering the Mississippi River from Lake Itasca to New Orleans.”

In a recently published piece, the magazine decided to tackle the subject of its favorite paddling spots easily accessible from the Great River Road. Of course folks in the Winona region know that we are home to some of the best canoeing, kayaking, and paddle boarding in the country, but its always nice to get recognition from a national publication.

The article lists two spots in each state that cozies up to the Big Muddy, from Minnesota all the way to Louisiana. The Winona area is mentioned twice, once in the best spots in Minnesota (Aghaming Trail, Winona MN), and again just across and down river from Winona (Voyageurs Canoe Trail, Tempealeau WI).

Have a look at what the magazine wrote about each spot…

AGHAMING TRAIL (WINONA, MN) – 6.7 MILES

“Glide on the currents in southern Minnesota! Aghaming Trail near Lastch Island allows travelers to experience floodplain forests and the wildlife that comes with the terrain.”

VOYAGEURS CANOE TRAIL (TREMPEALEAU, WI) – 3.4 MILES

“During the mid-1800s, French Canadian fur traders traveled along the trail to expand and explore. Today, travelers can explore the same trail among marsh terrain and scenic views of the bluffs.”
