The City of Winona Parks and Recreation has been awarded the MRPA, (Minnesota Recreation and Parks Association), Award of Excellence for the Sugar Loaf Ice Climbing Park in the Park and Facility category. The MRPA magazine featured the ice climbing park in its Fall issue. “The City of Winona has an amazing ice climbing park that attracts people from all over the Midwest. The quality of the ice…ease of access at the base, and tops of the routes and proximity to town make the ice climbing park a premier climbing destination.”
The Winona Ice Park is a manmade ice climbing park set high above the Mississippi River with wonderful views of the city of Winona below. Using the stone walls of an old quarry and hundreds of feet of hose, which slowly shower water down the cliff, the Winona Ice Park is one of just a few of its kind in the nation.
MPRA also credited Winona Parks and Recreation for creating outdoor mountain biking and hiking trails and rock climbing routes in the bluffs high above the city.
