Post Bulletin feature: Great Views along the River in Winona
John Sievers with the Post Bulletin recently visited Winona with his wife Beth to check out some of the city’s spectacular views along the Mississippi River. Their first stop: scaling the bluff of Sugar Loaf Park up towards Sugar Loaf rock, one of Winona’s most iconic (and historic) landmarks. According to John, the trail is steep and takes roughly 45 minutes round trip, but the panorama at the top — including sweeping views of the city, Lake Winona, the Mississippi River and even the domed spires of Saint Stanislaus Basilica below — makes it well worth the effort. Not to mention the 85-foot tall “sugar-shaped” rock formation that looms ~500 feet above the city and provides sport for rock climbers and the like. The Sugar Loaf trail entrance is located behind the Edina Realty building parking lot at 825 East Lake Boulevard.
Needing a bit of rest and rejuvenation, John and Beth stopped into Treasures Under Sugar Loaf nearby for some treasure hunting of antiques and collectibles. The three-storied building is stockpiled with all sorts of goodies–from furniture to clothing to dishware to rare collectible items. Once they had their treasure hunting fill, and eager for another unbeatable view, the couple headed back up the bluff–in a car this time–to Garvin Heights Park for the panoramic views at Garvin Heights Overlook. John and Beth ended their Winona adventure with a farm-to-table lunch at Heirloom Seasonal Bistro in downtown Winona.
“The time that Beth and I spent hiking up to the Sugar Loaf and exploring Winona left us feeling weary in body but refreshed in spirit,” said John. So, if you’re looking for a day trip or weekend adventure that involves a rigorous outdoor activity, spectacular city and river views, and treasure hunting with a side of good eats, Winona, too, can refresh your spirit!
