Travel writer @knead.to.roam spends the Weekend in Winona
A few weekends ago, Minnesota-based travel blogger Antonia (@knead.to.roam) spent two days exploring Winona with her family — here’s what she had to say!
Day 1 kicked off on the Flyway Trail, a scenic multi-use path perfect for walkers and bikers of all ages. While walking, keep an eye out for birds and wildlife along the Mississippi River backwaters as well as trains going by. As Antonia put it, “the friendly energy from the other bikers, hikers, and bird watchers makes this local spot feel lively and fun the whole way!” To refresh, grab a post hike drink (and snack) from Blooming Grounds Coffee House in downtown Winona before checking into the recommended home base: Hotel 44° North. Some highlights of the hotel include the double queen suite with kitchenette, complimentary breakfast, and indoor pool/hot tub + sauna. In her own words, “this new-ish, very comfortable hotel has an unbeatable, walkable downtown location and beautiful river views. I highly recommend booking your weekend stay here!” To cap the evening, Antonia suggests that families grab takeout from Heirloom Seasonal Bistro and bring it to Two Fathoms Brewing for a family-friendly evening of games and live music.
Day 2 leans into Winona’s uniquely local character. The morning starts with coffee and pastries at Café Sapori di Sicilia, followed by a visit to the Minnesota Marine Art Museum, which Antonia suggests was “one of the most beautiful and kid-friendly art museums we’ve been to.” The Waterbar Cafe inside also offers beautiful river views, a relaxed atmosphere, and delicious menu fit for the whole family. No visit to Winona is complete without an afternoon in its historic downtown, where brick buildings and wide, walkable streets lead you to gems like Yarnology, Chapter 2 Books, and of course Nate & Ally’s Frozen Treat Creations for a dish of frozen yogurt or scoop of ice cream. Once all sugared up, take a walk along the bike path of Lake Winona or check out the panoramic views from Garvin Heights lookout. For an evening meal, head to Miya Japanese Bistro for sushi or other flavorful hibachi dishes.
If you’re staying longer than 2 days, consider checking out these other family friendly experiences: Sugar Loaf Bluff trails, Levee Park, The Polish Cultural Center & Museum, Winona County History Center, Watkins Museum & Store, Bloedow Bakery, Bob Welch Aquatic Center (in Summer), or nearby State Parks (Great River Bluffs, John A. Latsch, and Whitewater). Antonia says it well: “Whether you’re planning your first visit or already dreaming about your next trip, Winona is the kind of place that keeps surprising you in the best way.”
@knead.to.roam also added Winona to her list of “EPIC Bucket List Trips in Minnesota with Kids” highlighting Winona’s stunning river and bluff views, vibrant arts scene, and historic downtown of cafés, shops, and family-friendly restaurants. Winona is the kind of place that surprises you — and once you’ve been, you’ll already be planning your return.
