Twin Cities’ WCCO News features Winona in ‘Goin’ to the Lake’ Series

Lake Winona Lilypads Sugarloaf Bluff Southeastern Minnesota Driftless Area

WCCO News anchors Amelia Santaniello and Mike Max spent a few days taking in much of what Winona has to offer and reported on their experience in WCCO’s series, “Goin’ to the Lake”.

The anchors split their coverage between some recorded segments and some live broadcasts. The pair visited timeless Winona treasures as Bloedow’s, Lakeview Drive Inn, and new(er) institutions like Ed’s (no name) Bar, and the Minnesota Marine Art Museum, among other well loved spots. Santaniello and Max even took a canoe out from Lake Park Lodge for what proved to be a hilarious segment.

In a Minnesota CBS News article, “Goin’ to the Lake: Amelia and Mike in Winona”, WCCO writes, “Once you’re (in Winona), you’ll be welcomed to a city of about 27,000 people. They live a culture that embraces the water around them — both the river and the lakes. One thing you don’t find many other places are the towering bluffs carved by the Mississippi. Winona is small enough to have the feel of a small town, but big enough to have all the amenities of a larger city. And the outdoor recreation is tough to beat anywhere in Minnesota.”

On day one, the WCCO crew visited a number of places for recorded segments including: The Pillbox Bat Co. and Sandborn Canoe, Garvin Heights Lookout, Lakeview Drive Inn, a canoe trip on Lake Winona, and the Great River Shakespeare Festival, where they were treated to a fight call, where the actors go through their fight scenes for extra safety and practice. Santaniello and Max also went on live at Lake Park Lodge, and Ed’s (no name) Bar, where they were greeted by an excited crowd of locals.

On day two they stopped by Bloedow’s Bakery, the Minnesota Marine Art Museum, took a cruise on WSU’s Cal Fremling Research Boat, played handball with standout Winona players, Andy and Bailey Nett, and broadcast live from Winona Levee Park.
