Alec Soth: Sleeping by the Mississippi
This groundbreaking photographic series garnered international fame to Alec Soth. This exhibit features portraits and locations along the entire length of the Mississippi River, including the Winona area. Built on the pastoral shore of the Mississippi River and surrounded by swaying native prairie plantings, the Minnesota Marine Art Museum boasts a collection of fine art that rivals even the most cosmopolitan cities.
Find out more »Maarten Platje: The Early History of the U.S. Navy
This exhibition features recent paintings by Dutch marine painter Maarten Platje showcasing important historic nineteenth-century U.S. naval ships and battles. Platje has a mastery of sailing ships and has sailed the waters depicted in his works. His paintings are richly detailed, technically accurate, and extensively researched to provide a realistic portrayal of historic ships, battles, and events. There will be an opening reception celebrating the exhibition on Thursday, May 9 from 5:00-7:00 PM.

Curator of Education Heather Casper hosts her own slow jam at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum, a slow ‘art’ jam. When you take your time with an artwork you make new discoveries. During Slow Art Jam, Casper will lead a facilitated hour-long group conversation while looking at one artwork, allowing participants to observe, discover and drive the conversation. Manipulating fabric and fabric-like materials, quilt artists interpret water as one of the most vital, desired, powerful, sacred, and enjoyed resources on earth in H2Oh! Art Quilts. This exhibition features 34 unique pieces created by members of Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA), a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote the art quilt.

Oh, Canada!
Oh, Canada! features art and artists exploring the people, maritime history, and incredible landscapes of Canada. Included are works by Donald Curley, Jack Gray, Luther Pokrant, Randolph Parker, Christopher Walker, and Robert Glenn. Also featured is a new painting by contemporary master Len Tantillo, Quebec City, c. 1748, depicting this important maritime center and one of the oldest European settlements in North America.

Shutterbug: The Mid-Century Photography of David Tewes
This exhibition features the found photography of World World II veteran and Hutchinson, Minnesota native David Tewes. After Tewes’ death in 1991, his family discovered a large collection of his Kodachrome photographic slides taken between 1944 and 1955 of his native Minnesota and his travels across America. This is the first ever public exhibition of his personal snapshots.

MMAM: Christy Lee Rogers: Baroque Water Worlds
Hawaii native Christy Lee Rogers creates beautiful, complex, and colorful images of people underwater. Her fluid compositions, choreography, costumes, dramatic lighting, and bold colors make her large-scale digital images appear like 17th century Baroque paintings. Her work is exhibited globally and she is the winner of the 2019 Sony World Photographer of the Year award.

With varying degrees of abstraction, Minneapolis painter Greg DeGrace’s paintings reference the Driftless region of Minnesota and Wisconsin, an area that escaped the flattening effects of glaciers during the last ice age. MMAM: Memories of Titanic
Explore art and objects associated with the loss and shipwreck of RMS Titanic. On view will be a young survivor’s riveting first-hand account of the disaster, including the loss of her father, in her diary and personal letters.
