The landscape of downtown Winona is changing, and the Winona City Council recently approved the rezoning request by Schwab Construction Services of Winona and Main Square Development LLC to begin work on a four-building development that will bring 121 market-rate apartments and up to 30,000 square feet of commercial space, including a restaurant, to the 1.6-acre site at the southeast corner of Washington Street and West Fourth Street.
Finance & Commerce published an article titled, “Mixed-use project would be a ‘catalyst’ for downtown Winona“, in which the proposed $30 million+ project is featured.
“Monday night, the Winona City Council approved a rezoning request to make way for the four-building development. Known as Main Square West, the development is ‘similar in size and scope’ to the adjacent Main Square apartment building, according to city documents,” stated the article.
This development is located across the street from the Minnesota Masterpiece Hall site, slated to open in 2026. According to the Minnesota Masterpiece Hall website, it’s “mission is to build communities through quality experiences by presenting art masterworks, internationally recognized concert artists, and inspirational education programs. This impressive visual and performing arts center will enhance and embrace the splendor of music and enrich the appreciation of art while nurturing society’s best hopes and visions for the future.”
Main Square Development LLC, the project owner, was started by retired Fastenal founder Bob Kierlin. The owner aims to “be a catalyst for redeveloping downtown Winona,” said Pete Schwab of Schwab Construction Services.
