Off 90 featured the Winona Public Library their latest episode and highlighted some things about it. The Winona Public Library, established 127 years ago, owes its grand design and opulence to philanthropist William Harris Laird. Opened in January 1899, the library stands out with its luxurious decor, glass floors for better lighting, and three floors of original wood and copper. The Belle Art Room, featuring a Carrera marble statue and a Kenyon Cox mural, adds to the library’s grandeur. A failed 1980s referendum preserved the original building, and later renovations made it ADA accessible. Today, the library continues to be a community hub, offering various programs and events, and recently celebrated its 125th anniversary with a documentary, mayoral proclamation, picnic, and author series.
