Arts Midwest’s article “Along the Mississippi River, Two Indigenous Artists Trace Connecting Currents” explores the artistic journeys of Indigenous artists Hillary Kempenich and Marlena Myles as they navigate their identities and cultural heritage along the Mississippi River. Both artists draw inspiration from their Indigenous roots and the landscapes of their homelands, using their art to reclaim narratives and connect with their communities.

Hillary Kempenich, a member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa, creates intricate beadwork that reflects her cultural heritage and personal experiences. She incorporates traditional Ojibwe floral designs into her work, infusing it with symbolism and meaning. Through her art, Kempenich aims to preserve and revitalize Indigenous traditions while also exploring contemporary themes.

Marlena Myles, a member of the Spirit Lake Dakota and Mohegan tribes, explores her Indigenous identity through digital art and animation. She combines traditional Indigenous motifs with modern techniques to create visually striking pieces that celebrate Native culture and challenge stereotypes. Myles’s art often addresses issues such as environmental conservation, cultural appropriation, and Indigenous representation in media.

Both artists emphasize the importance of storytelling in their work, using art as a means of preserving Indigenous knowledge and reclaiming their histories. Through their creativity, Kempenich and Myles aim to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of Indigenous cultures while also asserting their presence and resilience in contemporary society.

In Kempenich’s words, “Our histories were built into our art, language, and song. They tell stories of creation, family, and resilience, echoing back to our ancestors’ strength.”

Started as a joint exhibition, Aabijijiwan / Ukeyat yanalleh, It Flows Continuously at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum in Winona is the latest in a series coming from the artists’ participation in the The Big River Continuum project.
