MMAM Exhibition: Sonja Peterson: What the Trade Winds Brought
Minneapolis artist Sonja Peterson creates large-scale artworks, sculptures and installations from complex and intricately cut paper. The interplay between her colorful negative backgrounds, shadows, and foregrounds of paper provide a sense of movement and vibrancy to her subjects. Her works explore the flora, fauna, and the history of travelers above and below the world’s waters. The MMAM is closed on Mondays.

Medina, Minnesota artist Clara Ueland creates beautiful and colorful prints inspired by her trips to the Boundary Waters of northern Minnesota, Lake Superior, and Scotland. She prints in the labor intensive intaglio printing process, which uses a series of etched copper plates to produce the final image. The Minnesota Marine Art Museum is working with two social practice visual artists in residence, Ian Hanesworth and Marlena Myles, to engage with the museum, the museum’s garden, the Mississippi River, and the Winona community as they reimagine and sketch their visions of what this garden can represent going forward. Marlena Myles and Ian Hanesworth will their sketches, notes and ideas about the direction they are going to create community engaged artwork for MMAM’s gardens. Join a docent-led tour at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum on Saturdays at 11am in June - August. This 30-minute orientation will introduce you to select paintings in the American and European exhibitions. There is no registration is required, and the tour is included in the cost of admission.

MMAM Exhibition: Karen Savage-Blue: Laughing Waters
Karen Savage-Blue is an Anishinaabe artist and art educator living and working in Duluth, MN. Her paintings explore themes of internal reflection, identifying with nature, and exposing transitions from human to natural forms. Her work can be dreamlike and surreal, and she depicts nature in its raw form, creating a platform where thoughts and emotions overcome the tendency to decipher meaning. The MMAM is closed on Mondays.

The evening will begin by gathering in the atrium at MMAM and meeting their artist host. The group will then a take a short inspirational tour of the museum (identifying a couple of signature pieces to spark conversation, chosen by your artist guide), and continue with a meet-up in the Oberton Education Room for inspiring conversation that ranges from anything from technique, to who’s making what, to sales strategies, and other opportunities.

St. Paul artist, Anne Labovitz, creates colorful and powerful large-scale works and installations to invite and engage viewers as part of her artistic and social justice processes. Her recent work explores her childhood experience growing up on the shore of Lake Superior and her current home and community along the Mississippi River.
