The Mississippi River Trail runs through Winona and the Amtrak stops in Winona so Explore Minnesota Tourism recommends boarding the morning Empire Builder Amtrak train in St. Paul with your bicycle ( you can directly load your bike into the luggage car) and departing for Winona in order to ride the Mississippi River Trail for a long weekend getaway. After a two hour train ride and arrive in Winona, plan to stop at the Winona Visitor Center to get local information and some tips on where  to eat at a local cafe for a late breakfast before starting the trek along the MRT which runs along the Mississippi River. It’s a scenic delight for bicyclists exploring the “soaring river bluffs, exhilarating descents and spectacular riverfront scenery,” and an unforgettable experience. After a long day on the bicycle, the lodging possibilities are endless and includes campsite, B&B’s, hotels and more.

“Winona is one of Minnesota’s most scenic river towns, and boasts a charming downtown with lots to see and do.”
