In Winona, the holiday spirit continues to shine bright through the Winter Display Show, an annual event where residents illuminate their homes with festive decorations. Initiated by Winona’s Parks and Rec Department in 2020 as a community-building activity during the COVID-19 pandemic, the display show has transformed into a cherished tradition. Ali Mayer, the recreation coordinator for Winona, expresses joy in witnessing the growth and evolving creativity of the displays each year.

The competition aspect adds an extra layer of excitement, with judges evaluating entries based on creativity, originality, and the elusive “magic factor” that captures the wonder of the season. While the top three displays receive prizes, many participants, like Jackie Whitman, emphasize that their primary motivation is sharing the joy of their decorations with the community. Whitman, entering the competition for the third consecutive year, values the opportunity to connect with neighbors and appreciate the diverse ways people express their holiday spirit.

Among the standout displays is John Pampuch’s elaborate setup, featuring lights synchronized to music. Pampuch, who dedicates 80 to 120 hours annually to create his display, describes decorating as a lifelong passion and derives happiness from bringing joy to others. Last year, Pampuch’s efforts earned him the title of “Best in Show.”

This year introduces a people’s choice award, allowing visitors to vote for their favorite display by scanning a QR code displayed in front of each house. Voting remains open until midnight on January 1, with winners announced on January 2. As the lights brighten the Winona community, Mayer encourages residents to indulge in the festive atmosphere, recommending a delightful evening of Christmas music, hot chocolate, and the enchantment of holiday lights, fostering moments of joy and nostalgia for all ages.
